The Museum of Serralves opens today, 11 July, the anniversary exhibition of the 30 years of the Foundation's Collection. It is all about telling the History of contemporary art, from the viewpoint "of the city and the country", asserts Director Philippe Vergne.

The exhibition is themed "Viagem ao princípio: ida e volta. 30 anos da Colecção de Serralves" - "Voyage to the beginning and back", and it will be on show till 3 November.

This exhibit is based on the Serralves Collection but it has a special motivation: to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Collection from 27 July 1989, the date the National Official Journal published the Decree-Law that set up the Serralves Foundation.

The host venues include, first the Museum of Contemporary Art of Serralves (MACS), then it will be featured at the Casa and the Serralves Foundation Park; after, it will showcase at Porto City Hall and it concludes in the Cruise Terminal of Leixões, in Matosinhos.

This exhibit "Viagem ao Princípio: Ida e Volta. Coleção de Serralves 1989-2019" marks the 30th anniversary of the Serralves Foundation, with the presentation of artwork from its collection that is relevant to the origin and to the History of the collection and the Museum.

This artwork is part of the seminal work that was especially collected or produced for the Serralves Museum and Collection, and also whose public presentation took place in Serralves.

These works are now remembered as crucial moments both in the artists' path and the history of the institution. Álvaro Lapa, António Dacosta, Ângelo de Sousa and Joaquim Rodrigo are but some of the artists whose work was linked to Serralves since from the beginning.

Artists Mathieu Abonnenc, André Cepeda, Hamish Fulton, Runa Islam, Albuquerque Mendes, Charlotte Moth, Maria Nordman, Lygia Pape, Augusto Alves da Silva, Mariana Silva and Simon Starling are among the artists whose work was especially carried out to form part of Serralves.

Pedro Cabrita Reis, Luc Tuymans or Lothar Baumgarten will be presented in the context of their solo exhibits in that institution, together with great projects carried out for specific venues in Serralves, namely Pedro Barateiro, Ana Jotta, Nick Mauss, Antoni Muntadas, Richard Tuttle and Luc Tuymans.

"Voyage to the Beginning and back", from 11 July to 3 November 2019.
