Student from the University of Porto wins WOCA 2019 Student Poster Presentation Award in the USA

The PhD student of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), Ana Cláudia Santos, has won the WOCA 2019 Student Poster Presentation Award, granted in the context of the World of Coal Ash Conference, which took place in St Louis, USA, from 13 to 17 May 2019.

The awarded poster encompasses the results obtained during the CHARPHITE project, which aims at finding substitute products for graphite, a natural resource of great economic value.

The main objectives of the CHARPHITE project are the selection and characterization of fresh and landfilled coal ash identified as suitable secondary raw material to be used for graphite supply and natural graphite substitution, as well as the optimization of the recovery methods and technologies to maximize the CHAR recovery, and to increase the CHAR quality in relation to its utilization.

Besides The Faculty od Sciences of the University of Porto, which is the Coordinator entity of such a project, the REQUIMTE lab and the PEGOP - Energia Elétrica, SA company, representing Portugal, and other entities from South Africa (University of Johannesburg), Argentina (Universidade de Buenos Aires), Poland (Central Mining institute and Carbograf) and Romania (Polytechnic University of Bucharest and the University Constantin Brancus) are part of this project.

The project started in 2016 and concludes in September 2019.
