The Summer School on Art & Cinema is back in Porto from 5 to 9 July. This event is organised by the School of Arts of Porto Catholic University and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the New Alphabet School from Berlin. The five-day programme invites for an array of activities on cinema and contemporary art.

The third edition of the Summer School outlining goal is to promote art and film. The programme extends to different venues in Porto, namely the Sala da Exposições da Escola das Artes da Católica, the Serralves Museum, the Cinema Trindade, the Coliseu Porto Ageas and the Cinema Passos Manuel, and gathers renowned national and foreign artists and filmmakers, experts in the field of contemporary cinema, from Australia, Brazil, Guinea-Bissau and Israel.

Besides the film screenings, which will rely on the filmmaker’s attendance, the programme features, on 6 July, the opening of the exhibition "Leitura do Mangue" by Filipa César and Sónia Vaz Borges. Access is free but subject to room capacity.

This year’s motto is “Survivance”, especially focused on ways to overcome violence in such inclement times of socio-political and ecological wrongdoing. The word “Survivance” was coined by Gerald Vizenor, the American scholar who advocates that victims should be empowered through art, politics and collective practices.

The event is organised with the support of the Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts and the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology.
