Launched as a tribute to culture by Paulo Cunha e Silva, former councillor for Culture at Porto City Hall (deceased in November 2015), with the outlining goal of reaching everyone everywhere in society, in all venues, formal and informal, all across the city, the municipal programme Cultura em Expansão continues, as expected, to transform the city, by expanding values and new perspectives towards life. This session is no different, and on 19 May, at 7.30 pm, the Associação Nun’Álvares de Campanhã hosts a concert by JP Simões & Amigos.

The municipal programme’s Cultura em Expansão stated mission is to celebrate culture everywhere with everyone in Porto and this month already sees a number of projects and artistic residencies come to life within the communities of Pasteleira, Miragaia, Bouça and Campanhã.

In its eighth mission, the Cultura em Expansão collaborates with the Teatro do Frio, Visões Úteis, Confederação – collective of Theatre and Sonoscopia – in four main poles: the Residents Association of the Social Neighbourhood of Pasteleira-Previdência/Torres, the Musical Group of Miragaia, the Residents Association of Bouça and the Association Nun’Álvares of Campanhã. The focus will be a series of initiatives in different parts of the city and outdoor concerts in the nearby areas, in the summer.

Following the programme presentation, singer and composer JP Simões takes to the stage with a newly established band, especially set up for the occasion, featuring Nuno Ferreira in the guitar and bass, Rui Alves in percussion and Sérgio Costa on the piano. JP Simões has a two decade experience in the music scene, namely with the bands Pop Dell’Arte, the Belle Chase Hotel (which he founded) and the Quinteto Tati. This is his solo project, in collaboration with other composers, where he will present his own compositions, and also songs related to the Carnation Revolution, as a tribute to José Mário Branco, as the “cantautor” (Portuguese word for singer-songwriter of his own lyrics and compositions, as well as music) would celebrate his 79th anniversary.

The show has limited seat capacity and the prior collection of the free tickets is mandatory (maximum two per people) at the Associação Nun’Álvares, starting at 5.30 pm, on the day of the event.

The 2021 Cultura em Expansão will have, as before, the patronage of the Mota-Engil SGPS, the Foundation Manuel António da Mota and the Mota Gestão e Participações, SGPS, SA.
