Volotea, the Spanish low-cost airliner will strengthen its operations at the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport. The airliner started operations at Porto Airport in April 2019 with flight connections to Bilbao.

"Our goal is to increase the number of route frequencies in the Bilbao route and then assess other routes, probably to Spain or to touristic islands" affirmed the director of Business Development for Volotea, Carlos Cerqueiro, during a press conference held in Porto.

According to the same official, "Porto Airport has a lot of potential", and the 10 % annual rate growth enabled to reach the number of 12 million passengers, "which shows the dynamic performance of the region served by the airport", from Galiza to northern and central Portugal".

Fernando Vieira, Director of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport has also mentioned "the nearly 100 daily routes operated at Porto Airport" and enhanced that infrastructure works are ongoing at a good pace in order to "start being a significant long-haul routes airport and as well as a transfer airport and not merely a point-to-point airport".

The Spanish Company started operating two weekly flights in Porto, the route Porto -Bilbao, with seat-occupancy rate at 90%. The company currently operates 319 routes in 83 European cities of 13 countries, and it has handled circa 6.6 million passengers last year.
