Written by one of the great master German playwrights, Heinrich von Kleist, ‘The Duel’ accounts for the story of a virtuous woman slandered by a nobleman”, a topic that fascinated Von Kleist: the fact that innocent people would be ostensibly punished despite being innocent.

The play was published in 1811 and still remains one of the great works of German literature, as far as great critics and writers are concerned, such as Thomas Mann. “The Duel” is staged by Carlos Pimenta, and takes to the stage at Theatre Carlos Alberto (TeCA) from 1 to 10 July.

“No amount of wisdom could possibly make sense of the mysterious verdict which God intended through this duel”: the pay was written more than two centuries ago and tells the story of the murder of the patriarch of the Von Breysach family. Actor Miguel Loureiro stars in a novella that addresses “premeditation and chance, failure and success”.

The play will be on stage at TeCA from Wednesday to Saturday, at 7 pm, and on Sundays, at 4 pm. On 2 July, there is a Talk at the end of the presentation, conducted by playwright and Professor Jorge Louraço Figueira.

On the last day on stage, 10 July, Maria Filomena Molder, in charge of the translation and drama adaptation, staged by Carlos Pimenta, joins José Bragança de Miranda and José Gomes Pinto to address the topic of the modernity of the text by the German playwright, during the conference “Kleist: o(s) sentido(s) da justiça” [“Kleist: the sense(s) of Justice”, free translation].

The Talk is entrance free, upon prior collection of the ticket. The show features a price ticket of 10 euros.
