Porto Design Biennale can help us (re)define our lifetime

The second edition of Porto Design Biennale is themed “Alter-Realidades: Desenhar o Presente”, [“Alter-Realities: Drawing the Present”, free translation]. The programme features 49 activities, 9 curators, 11 workshops, 20 online talks and 24 hosting venues in Porto and in Matosinhos, from 2 July to 25 July.

Consumers’ choice grants Five star Prize to the Serralves Foundation

The Prize “Cinco Estrelas Regiões” [“Five stars Region”, free translation] was afforded to the Serralves Foundation, which is described “as a European reference” and “one of the main cultural institutions when it comes to disseminating Contemporary Art, besides being a heritage asset that is classified as national monument”. This is the 4th edition of the competition, and consumers voted in the Serralves Foundation in the category Museums.

Uplifting 2021 Cultura em Expansão scheduled for 19 May: save the date

Launched as a tribute to culture by Paulo Cunha e Silva, former councillor for Culture at Porto City Hall (deceased in November 2015), with the outlining goal of reaching everyone everywhere in society, in all venues, all across the city, the municipal programme Cultura em Expansão continues, as expected, to transform the city, by expanding values and new perspectives towards life. On 19 May, at 7.30 pm, the Associação Nun’Álvares de Campanhã hosts a concert by JP Simões & Amigos.

Early bird tickets to attend WOMEX 2021

Applications are open for WOMEX 2021, the World Music Expo, which takes to Porto between 27th and 31st October. This event is one of the most relevant music support and development projects in the global music scene. The event will introduce thousands of music makers and music lovers from over 90 countries, in the Invicta.

Grab your coats and let’s go out: Bienal’21 Fotografia do Porto is back with 19 exhibitions

The second edition of Porto Photography Biennale is held between 14 May and 27 June. It will gather 46 artists and it will bring to the city 19 exhibitions, out of which 15 will take to spaces in the Invicta, one in Lisbon and three will be held in a virtual format. All events are entrance free.

Conference to debate the outlining role of culture starts today in Serralves

Starting today, and until 6 May, the Serralves Foundation holds in-person and videoconference meetings with cultural agents, experts, academics and representatives of the artistic and cultural sector, as well as European leaders, with the main purpose of discussing and debating the impact of culture on social, economic and territorial cohesion in Europe.

Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira features ways of seeing the art of film

Every Tuesday, until the end of June, Serralves features cinema sessions inspired by the work of renowned Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira. The programme “Cinema and Photography: Visões Espectrais” invites audiences to discuss both photo and film as means of expression from the point of view of death. The starting point of the cinema cycle is the film “O Estranho Caso de Angélica”, by Manoel de Oliveira. The plot revolves around a picture of a newly-deceased girl who is smiling.

Step up Clérigos Tower and Museum starting on 15 May

The landmark building will reopen on 15 May, offering splendour with heightened comfort and innovation, with improved tour circuits and itineraries. Moreover, upon purchase of a ticket, the institution offers a free one.

In-person and online performances, world and national premieres. This is FITEI and it starts tomorrow

Sometimes one show isn’t enough, as we see the FITEI agenda and realise that as of tomorrow and until 16th May, FITEI – International Iberian Theatre Festival takes to the stage 14 in-person performances and 10 online shows to grasp the concepts of environmental, political, individual, affective, sexual and mental sustainability. Seven performances are world premieres and ten take to the national stages for the first time.
